KES come agonisingly close to winning water polo tournament for first time in 10 years - 04 March 2010

King Edward VII School hosted their annual Water Polo festival over the weekend of 26 to 28 February 2010. The tournament, widely regarded as the premier schoolboy tournament in South Africa, draws the best teams from around the country. This year was no different as the likes of DHS, Clifton College, SACS and Grey High joined the Gauteng based sides for an intense competition.

KES with an extremely young but talented team (only 3 matric players in the side), were bidding to make the final for the first time in 10 years. The pool games were closely fought, and ultimately 4 Johannesburg teams won through to the semi-finals - St Stithians, Parktown, St John's and KES. The first semi between Parktown and St Stithians initially seemed a fairly one sided affair as Parktown raced into a 10 - 3 lead, but a remarkable comeback from St Stithians saw the game tied at 11 - 11 when the final whistle sounded. Extra time was required and Parktown managed to re-establish dominance, eventually winning 14 - 12.

In the second semi, KES were pitted against St John's College, the tournaments defending champions and traditional favourite at the tournament. KES young stars were not overawed, and controlled the game from start to finish, coming out 17 - 14 winners. St John's beat St Stithians in the 3rd/4th place play-off.

The final, between KES and Parktown was well supported, with both KES and Parktown parents equally vocal. King Edwards started strongly and established a 3 goal lead which they carried into the third chukka. Parktown increased their intensity and began clawing their way back into the match but were still trailing by 2 with 3 minutes left on the clock. With only minutes remaining till victory KES lost concentration and took 3 ill advised shots which resulted in turnovers that Parktown converted at the other end of the pool. 40 seconds from full time Wesley Brown scored what turned out to be the winning goal, snatching victory from the KES team. Final score Parktown 13 - KES 12.

However KES were rewarded for the excitement they brought to the tournament, when Malcolm Marx, Gavin Orchard and Alex Watt-Pringle were named in the tournament team, and Axle Watt-Pringle was named player of the tournament.
