Mjekevu, who was selected for the SA Schools Rugby team when he was in Matric, is still only 18 years old and is one of the youngest South African players ever to play in the Super 14. Mjekevu is studying at the University of Johannesburg, and represented the Lions u19 team throughout 2009. A change in coaching staff at the Lions saw Dick Muir become director of coaching, and one of his first moves was to call up Mjekevu. Mjekevu was promoted without ever having played Vodacom Cup or Currie Cup rugby.
Mjekevu's debut was fairly inauspicious as the Lions lost 26 - 13, courtesy of a try from another KES old boy Bryan Habana. Mjekevu had limited opportunities, and aside from a big hit on hooker Tiaan Liebenburg, didn't see much action. He left the field with cramp after 50 minutes. Mjekevu will get another opportunity this week against the Chiefs, finalists in last years Super 14. |
