KES – Apart from the others
One of the top public schools in the country, the School provides a good quality, all round education at very good value for money. It possesses a strong academic department, a wide variety of cultural activities (dramatic society, debating, public speaking, chess, pipe band) and a very high standard of sporting activities in more than ten different sporting codes to cater for the whole school population. Participation in extra curricular activities is seen as being integral to a complete education.

The King Edward VII pupil not only excels on the sports field, but in the political arena. The Junior City Council Mayor of Johannesburg in 2005 was Chris MacRoberts and the 2006 Junior Mayor is Puso Thahane – a remarkable achievement for the School to be producing the leaders of society. Looking at the senior leaders of society the School has produced, perhaps no surprise.

The pupil population comes from a wide spectrum of cultural and religious groups, representing the demographics of the country, thus providing an effective and realistic education for life in SA.
The ethos of education at King Edward is based on fundamental values that include a high standard of discipline and manners – the School has a reputation for its impeccable manners shown by its boys. The committed, dedicated and highly trained staff is prepared to go the extra mile for the sake of the boys in the School. This instils in the boys at King Edward a real pride in their School which is manifested in their support of each other and of all school activities.

The School boasts 3 boarding houses accommodating 280 boarders in total. The boarding environment provides an opportunity for the boys to become involved in all facets of School life. They eat, sleep and drink King Edward’s. Through this, they are not distracted by the many vices that idle, unsupervised children are exposed to while their parents are at work. This is particularly important in the context of the family unit of the 21st century.

The School prides itself in the number of leaders in all walks of life that have passed through its portals: Judge Richard Goldstone, Judge Johan Kriegler, Mr Gary Player, Mr Wiliam Kentridge, Dr Ali Bacher, Joe Van Niekerk, Byran Habana, Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie.
